Windstorm Mitigation Credits

The features that protect your home can lower your premium.

Florida rewards homes built or upgraded to stand up to wind, and Sypher applies those windstorm mitigation credits to our HO-3 policies. If your home has the right roof and opening protections, you’ve likely already earned a discount — here’s how it works.

How these credits work

They lower the wind side of your premium. Mitigation credits reduce the windstorm portion of what you pay, and they apply to wind damage whether or not the storm is named a hurricane.
An inspection confirms them. Each credit is backed by a licensed inspector’s report on the state’s Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form (OIR-B1-1802).
They don’t stack dollar-for-dollar. Qualifying features aren’t simply added together — a combined maximum applies, and the total depends on your home, policy, and location.

What qualifies

These roofing and construction features make a home more wind-resistant, and each one can earn a credit on a Sypher policy.
Roof Covering
A roof covering that meets Florida Building Code standards (FBC-equivalent) qualifies for a credit.
Roof Deck Attachment
How securely the roof deck is fastened — stronger nailing, such as 8d nails — can increase the credit.
Roof-to-Wall Connection
Hardware that anchors the roof to the walls — clips, single wraps, or double wraps — earns more than basic toe-nails.
Roof Shape
A hip roof, where at least 75% of the perimeter slopes inward, earns the more favorable hip rating.
Secondary Water Resistance
An added barrier beneath the roof covering that helps keep water out if the covering is lost in a storm.
Opening Protection
Impact-rated windows and doors, or approved shutters, that shield a home’s openings from wind-borne debris.

From inspection to savings

Turning your home’s wind-resistant features into credits takes three steps.
1
Get inspected
A licensed inspector documents your home’s wind features on the OIR-B1-1802 form.
2
Hand it to your agent
Your Sypher agent reviews the report and verifies each feature that qualifies.
3
See it on your policy
Confirmed credits are applied to the windstorm portion of your premium.

Other ways to save

Wind mitigation isn’t the only way to lower your premium. Depending on your home, a Sypher policy may also qualify for these — your agent can confirm eligibility.
Burglar Alarm
A local or centrally monitored system, confirmed by an alarm certificate.
Secured Community
A home in a gated, or gated and guarded, community.
Fire Alarm
A centrally monitored fire alarm, confirmed by an alarm certificate.
Senior
At least one named insured age 60 or older as of the policy effective date.
Fire Sprinkler System
A full sprinkler system, confirmed by a sprinkler certificate.
Water Protective Device
Leak-detection technology, from simple sensors to flow-based automatic shutoff.

Not sure what your home qualifies for?

Your licensed independent agent can walk through the credits your home has earned and show you the exact savings reflected on your policy.
This page is a general summary of the windstorm mitigation credits and other premium discounts available on Sypher Insurance Exchange personal residential (HO-3) policies, offered in accordance with Section 627.0629, Florida Statutes, and Rule 69O-170.017, Florida Administrative Code.

The dollar amount of your own discounts is shown on the Notice of Premium Discounts for Hurricane Loss Mitigation (Form OIR-B1-1655) and in your policy documents, which control. Amounts vary by home, policy, and location, are subject to verification by a qualified wind mitigation inspection, and individual credits are not added together. Nothing on this page changes the terms of any policy.
